HOW TO CLEANSE

Apatite can be cleansed regularly by placing it in a dish of sea salt, leaving it overnight and wiping it clean the next day. It can also be cleansed by holding it under running water, resting it under the full moon, under a new moon, burying it in soil or by smudging it with Sage.


USES IN HISTORY

Apatite was once a common source of phosphate for fertiliser, but phosphorites are now the predominant ingredient. The comparatively low hardness (5 Mohs) of Apatite restricts its usage as a gem in jewellery and its mainly used in as a gemstone in earrings, brooches and pendants (low contact jewellery). To avoid abrasion and its polish dulling, special care must be adhered to when Apatite is set in rings (high contact jewellery).
