USES IN HISTORY

In Ancient Rome, Fluorite was one of the most prized stones of the Ceasars due to its complex designs and colours. Also in Ancient Rome Fluorite was used to make the famous vasa murrina drinking cups. These cups were thought to prevent the drinker from getting drunk. Historical documents show that Emperor Nero paid for a Fluorite cup, which would have cost $300,000 in today’s dollars.

MINERAL COMPOSITION

Fluorite (also called Fluorspar) is the mineral form of Calcium Fluoride. It crystallizes in isometric cubes, although octahedral and more complex isometric forms are not uncommon. Fluorite is transparent, both in visible and ultraviolet light, but impurities usually make it a colorful mineral.

Fluorite is deposited in veins by hydrothermal processes, especially those containing Lead and Zinc minerals. Fluorite is also found in the fractures and cavities of some limestones and dolomites. It is a very common rock-forming mineral found in many parts of the world.
