Identify & Distinguish Compensation & Dysfunction

How’s it hanging?

Forward folds are a great indicator to measure how your body is feeling, how it’s moving & in some cases, how it isn’t moving…
Because our body is all interconnected, folding forward means our posterior muscles, tissues & joints are all coordinating together to accomplish one unified movement. When we bend, our nose might be a way away from our knees, & that’s completely okay, but keep in mind there are:
Safe options (soft bend in the knees) vs. compensation (rounding through the lumbar or thoracic spine) vs. dysfunction (pelvis stuck in flexion – lack of mobility).
The next time you take a forward fold, notice the placement of your pelvis & hips then take a gentle scan from the soles of the feet, up your spine to the crown of the head.

  • What is your body telling you?
  • Where are you holding tension?
  • Are you leaning into safe options?
  • Or recognizing compensation or dysfunction?

Learning to identify & distinguish compensation & dysfunction can be a refreshing way to nourish your body at its core, to discover the “why” behind the “what”.

Apply these principles to your next movement practice & discover slightly more integrated core awareness.
